The vinegar disinfects, but has a lot less chemical/fumes. If you do use a bleach solution, let the mattress air outside very well before you bring it back in to use. It should have no trace of chlorine smell left. You might want to even wipe it down a few times afterwards with a little warm soapy water, just to get all the bleach off.
