Storing A Mattress
Storing your mattress in a “breathable” plastic bag will protect it from the elements. Purchase mattress bags at a mattress store or online. Avoid stowing your mattress in a thick plastic cover, as this will encourage condensation. Breathable plastic is enough to protect it from mold, dust and allergens while keeping it moisture-free. Mattresses aren’t meant to sit in storage for years, even with proper protection. The longer a mattress sits in storage, the better its chances for structural damage or damage to the fabric.
Freshening a Mattress After Storage
When it’s time to remove your mattress from storage, freshen it up before use. It may smell like the storage room, and it’s probably a little musty. If the weather is pleasant, lay your mattress outside for several hours to air out. Sprinkling baking soda on the mattress will allow it to absorb any odors or moisture. Vacuum a few hours later to remove the baking soda. A mattress store will also have products for cleaning the mattress or giving it a fresh scent. Use warm soapy water to remove any stains and allow it to dry before using.
